Alberto Olivero wins the "Attaccati al Tram" contest

Mipel 116 - International trade fair for leather and fashion accessories

Milan, September 15-18, 2019

There's no denying it; when you choose to take part in a contest, no matter what size it is, all your forces are focused on trying to express your skills to the best of your ability, have fun and, why not, win... Not necessarily in that order!

The competition in question, presented on the occasion of Mipel 116 and realized with the contribution of the Lombardy Region, concealed in the curious title of "Attaccati al streetcar" a very precise purpose: to award the three best creations (bags, backpacks, clutch bags, suitcases, etc.) inspired by the theme of the Milanese streetcar as a means of historical and sustainable transport.
To participate in the contest also the designer Alberto Olivero, who has retraced the steps that led him to the realization of his prototype.

"For my project, I started by analyzing the forms and characteristic traits that make the streetcar model 1500 of ATM unique. Starting with the trapezoidal shape of the front, characterized by three glass panels, I tried to bring it back to the front of a backpack, transforming the bottom panel into a large pocket and the panels into aesthetic motifs. For the handle, on the other hand, I was inspired by the pantograph, an element that allows the passage of current from the electrical wires to the streetcar, made of wood to recall the interiors of historical vehicles".

Another peculiar element from which the young designer has taken inspiration is the joint mechanism called bellows connecting carriages, indispensable to the streetcar to be able to curve: "Referring to its bellows shape, I thought it could become, as well as an aesthetic element, also functional, thus allowing to increase the internal space of the accessory".

Well, the backpack-tram designed for the occasion has first entered among the twenty finalists, and finally managed to bring home a wonderful victory, beating the competition!
In addition to the creative originality and skill of the realization, the success was also due to the green footprint of the raw materials used: "For the project I chose a vegetable-tanned leather and orca t3, a certified material for railway use from processing waste”.

In addition to the plaque given to Alberto by Rossella Brescia, (the symbolic voice of RDS, official radio of the event), the victory allowed the limited edition accessory to be exhibited at the concept store San Pietro in Porta Venezia (Milan), during the fashion week; a prestigious showcase that enhances the path of the Brand Alberto Olivero, now ready to take flight.
